##### ItemScalar Multiplication

We can multiply a vector $$\vvec$$ by a number $$a$$ by multiplying each of the components of $$\vvec$$ by $$a\text{.}$$ For instance,

\begin{equation*} -3\left[\begin{array}{r} 2 \\ -4 \\ 1 \\ \end{array}\right] = \left[\begin{array}{r} -6 \\ 12 \\ -3 \\ \end{array}\right]. \end{equation*}

The number $$a$$ is called a scalar.
